Airway Dentistry

Helping Kids Breathe, Sleep, and Grow, From the Very Start

The way your child breathes shapes far more than you might expect: their sleep, focus, mood, and even the growth of their face and jaw. Airway-focused dentistry looks at that bigger picture, catching small signs early so we can guide healthy development while your child is still growing.

Why Airway Dentistry Matters for Kids

A properly functioning airway is essential to your child's well-being. When breathing is restricted, often by mouth breathing, enlarged tonsils, or a narrow, developing jaw, children can experience fragmented sleep, lower oxygen at night, and a cascade of effects that show up during the day. As pediatric providers, we are in a unique position to notice the early clues, frequently before anyone else does.

The Case for Getting Ahead Early

Childhood is a window that does not stay open forever. Because a child's face and jaw are still forming, early, gentle guidance can steer development in the right direction, encouraging nasal breathing, proper tongue posture, and room for teeth and the airway to grow. Getting ahead of function at a young age can reduce the risk of sleep-disordered breathing, orthodontic problems, TMJ issues, and airway-related concerns later in life. In short, it is far easier to guide growth than to correct it after the fact.

Our Partnership with ToothPillow

To bring families a complete, modern approach to airway health, Bloom partners with ToothPillow, a program built by airway dentists and myofunctional therapists to support healthy jaw and airway development in children ages 3 to 12, without surgery. Together, we combine Bloom's in-office screening and relationship-based care with ToothPillow's guided, at-home program.

What an Airway Screening Looks Like at Bloom

We assess the whole child, not just the teeth. That means reviewing sleep and breathing history, looking at facial growth and symmetry, checking the palate, bite, and tongue function, and watching for outward signs of disrupted sleep. When it is helpful, we will coordinate with your child's pediatrician or recommend a sleep evaluation so every piece of the picture is accounted for.

The best part is that there is no downside to looking early. A screening is simple, comfortable, and gives you answers, whether that is reassurance that everything is on track, or a clear, gentle plan to help your child breathe and sleep better as they grow.

Airway and ToothPillow programs are recommended on an individualized basis. A screening is not a diagnosis of a sleep disorder. When appropriate, we coordinate with your child's physician or a sleep specialist.
